We Help You Resolve Your Divorce or Separation Out of Court

Lawyers, Jeff Keiter and Doug Walmer,  offer their clients Collaborative Law and Mediation as viable alternatives to going to court to resolve complex and emotionally-charged issues that arise in the context of their divorces or separations. We help clients whose marriages or domestic partnerships have ended to take control of the process of resolving their domestic disputes, to make fully informed decisions, based on their unique needs, interests and concerns, and to deal with each other respectfully in a dignified manner - without going to court. We practice in the Central Pennsylvania area, including Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Berks, York, Lancaster, Adams, Perry, and, Schuylkill Counties.

 Jeff Keiter and Doug Walmer, whose combined experience of practicing Family Law spans over 40 years, are committed to  helping clients  whose marriages or other domestic partnerships have ended  to take and retain control of the process of settling their disputes, to make fully informed, creative, decisions, based on their unique needs, interests and concerns, and to do so in a respectful and dignified manner.  The choices for dispute-resolution offered by Jeff Keiter and Doug Walmer are available to participants who are highly motivated to resolve their disputes out of court, willing to take full responsibility for an interest-based decision-making process, willing to openly express their interests, needs and concerns and to disagree, if necessary, and, finally, to work diligently toward a mutually acceptable - "win-win" - solution.

The fears and concerns of separating and/or divorcing couples

We know from experience, as well as from the results of independent research, that the breakup of a marriage or other significant domestic relationships can be one of the most traumatic emotional events in a person’s lifetime. Frequently, the ending of a relationship is accompanied by oppressive emotional pain, including feelings of extreme sadness, loneliness, betrayal, anxiety, anger,  stress and fear, including fear of the loss of economic security, fear of the loss or destruction of a family business or professional practice or of wealth, in general, and fear of the destruction of important relationships with children or other family members and friends. Many couples, seeking to avoid these feelings and concerns, tend to turn first to the conventional, Adversary Legal System to protect their rights  and make just decisions, which are likely to affect them for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, the ideal of obtaining economic justice through the conventional, adversary legal system very often does not conform to the reality of  the judicial process. The reality is that the process of divorce or other Family Law litigation within the conventional, adversary court system often falls far short of expectations. At times, Family Law litigation can seem like an endless struggle to survive financially and emotionally, with legal fees and expenses steadily increasing or spiraling out of control as the struggle drags on, and emotions become overwhelmed.

We believe that what separating and/or divorcing couples want most is:

  • to protect their children from emotional harm;
  • competent advice and counsel concerning the law;
  • control of the process and the outcome instead of relinquishing control to a master or  judge;
  • to feel understood and safe - emotionally, legally and financially;
  • an expedited process;
  • a process that is affordable; and
  • to minimize the pain of the divorce or separation.

Separating and/or divorcing couples can avoid going to court

  • Separating and/or divorcing couples can – without going to Court
  • Learn to come to terms with the realities of their new situation
  • Achieve reasonable and fair financial settlements and child-centered family solutions

Through non-adversarial, client-centered processes for dispute resolution such as as Collaborative Law, Mediation and Interest-based Negotiation, couples can successfully negotiate a mutually acceptable outcome that is specifically tailored to their and their family's most important needs and concerns following separation and/or divorce.
